Proportional Allocation

Allocate sample sizes proportionally across population strata with non-response adjustment and detailed calculation steps.

Taro Yamane Formula

Calculate sample size for finite populations with a simple, widely-used formula that includes optional non-response adjustments.

Cochran's Formula

Advanced sample size calculation for proportions with flexible input formats (decimal, percentage, or with symbol).

Other Sample Size Formulas

Sample size calculations for mean estimation and correlation studies.

Advanced Stratification

All calculators feature optional stratification with proportional allocation, allowing you to specify stratum sizes and see individual sample sizes for each group.

Proportional Allocation

Allocate sample size proportionally across population strata

Formula

n_i = (N_i / N) × n
Where n_i is the sample size for stratum i, N_i is the population of stratum i, N is the total population, and n is the total sample size. This ensures each stratum is represented proportionally to its size in the population.

Taro Yamane Formula

Calculate sample size for finite populations

Formula

n = N / (1 + N × e²)
Where n is the sample size, N is the population size, and e is the margin of error. This formula assumes a 95% confidence level (Z = 1.96) and is suitable for finite populations where the sample will be a significant proportion of the population.

Cochran's Formula

Sample size calculation for proportions with flexible input formats

Formula

n₀ = Z² × p × (1-p) / e²
For finite populations: n = n₀ / (1 + (n₀ - 1)/N)

Where Z is the Z-score for the confidence level, p is the estimated proportion, e is the margin of error, and N is the population size (optional for finite population correction). Accepts multiple input formats: 0.50, 50, or 50%.
Accepts: 0.50 (decimal), 50 (percentage), or 50% (with symbol)
Common values: 1.645 (90%), 1.96 (95%), 2.576 (99%)
